The NCAA has handed down a one-year suspension to Las Vegas Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce for violating ethical conduct standards.
NCAA Investigation Uncovers ‘Impermissible Recruiting Activities’
Pierce was implicated in the NCAA’s investigation into the Arizona State Sun Devils for a reported “program-wide initiative to engage in impermissible recruiting activities during the COVID-19 dead period.” He served as the defensive coordinator for ASU from 2018 to 2021 under head coach Herm Edwards.
On Thursday, the NCAA shared details of a “scheme” that Pierce and other staff members used to circumvent restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Pierce facilitated prohibited recruiting interactions—including tryouts, facility tours, and entertainment—for 35 prospective players and their families. He arranged or personally provided complimentary meals, equipment, airfare, and/or lodging for 27 recruits.
In a noteworthy incident, Pierce took a prospect’s parents to a “gentlemen’s club” as part of their entertainment during campus visits.
The NCAA’s findings revealed that Pierce allegedly “ran the show” for the ASU football program. Many coaching staff members indicated in interviews with enforcement officials that they feared job loss if they did not adhere to his instructions.
Pierce and ASU Coaching Staff Face Ramifications
In April, the NCAA announced penalties against Arizona State for recruiting violations that occurred under former head coach Herm Edwards. Alongside an undisclosed fine and four years of probation, ASU was subjected to reduced scholarships and stricter recruiting limitations.
Edwards received a five-year show-cause penalty. Pierce’s situation was resolved separately, meaning he was not part of the university’s negotiated settlement with the NCAA.
The NCAA established that, should Pierce wish to return to college coaching, he will face a one-year suspension from all athletic activities at any institution he joins. Additionally, he has been placed under an eight-year show-cause order, requiring any NCAA entity that hires him in the next eight years to justify why it should not face penalties.
