The Steelers clinched their sixth win of the season on Monday Night Football, overpowering the Giants 26-18 for their third straight victory. The defense shined in a match marked by limited scoring and dubious officiating. While Russell Wilson delivered a strong performance, it was Calvin Austin III who stood out and garnered significant spotlight.

Austin had an impressive outing, contributing to the touchdowns scored by both teams. He racked up three receptions for 54 yards and found the end zone, with his standout moment being a remarkable 75-yard punt return for a touchdown.

In a post-game discussion with NFL Insider Mike Garafolo, Austin acknowledged the pivotal role of the Steelers’ special teams coach, Danny Smith, alongside his teammates in achieving such a remarkable play:

    > “You know we have been talking about it all week, coach Danny and my teammates. It was just a perfect block, perfect setup. It was just all 11 and great coaching. Just everything, his intensity and passion for the game. He got our backs. So when we do something special like that, it is for him.”

Austin emphasized that he and Coach Smith have been strategizing punt return plays throughout the season, culminating in a flawless execution during the game.

He expressed deep admiration for Danny Smith, who is in his 11th season with the Steelers, highlighting the coach’s unwavering drive and intense passion for football.

Austin also praised Wilson, recognizing how he has rejuvenated his career in Pittsburgh. Many had questioned Wilson’s future, with expectations that he might serve as a backup to Justin Fields for the season.

However, Wilson seized his first chance to showcase his abilities. Austin and his teammates were confident from the outset that Russ would excel upon his arrival in Pittsburgh.

    ### Austin lauds Wilson’s offensive contributions

Russell Wilson has turned back time, making considerable contributions to a team known for its strong defense. Many assumed Fields would retain the starting position, believing the Super Bowl champion had little left to give.

Despite these doubts, Wilson is re-establishing his path towards a potential Hall of Fame career. Austin has not been surprised by Wilson’s high-level performance, stating that the quarterback has displayed a commendable dedication from the start.

Austin shared that Wilson connects with the receivers every day, bolstering their confidence and encouraging them to keep running, assuring them that he will get the ball to them.

    > “He’s been that way since day one. He’s always talking to us receivers, telling us to keep hunting, keep going, the ball is going to find us. Just like he said, it did.”

Wilson concluded the game with an impressive 278 passing yards, successfully completing 20 of 28 attempts, including a touchdown pass to Austin.

The Steelers now boast an unexpected 6-2 record as they head into their bye week. Calvin underscored the team’s belief in themselves and in Mike Tomlin’s leadership, reaffirming their commitment to following his plan. After the break, they will face the Commanders in week 10 on November 10th.
