The University of Georgia has announced the passing of Sonny Smart, father of head football coach Kirby Smart, who died early Saturday morning after suffering a fall in New Orleans.
According to a statement released, Sonny passed away at 12:15 a.m. ET, surrounded by his wife Sharon and their three children: Karl, Kirby, and Kendall.
“Sonny fell while walking on New Year’s Eve in New Orleans and sustained a hip fracture,” the statement detailed. “He was admitted to the hospital for hip surgery, but complications arose. He fought valiantly, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries.”
The statement also expressed, “The Smart family is profoundly grateful to Ochsner Hospital and the medical team for the exceptional care provided to Sonny. They request continued prayers for those impacted by the tragic events that took place in the early hours of New Year’s Day. The Smart family appreciates everyone’s thoughts and prayers and is now seeking comfort, strength, and guidance from God.”
The Smart family was in New Orleans for the Allstate Sugar Bowl playoff match between Notre Dame and Georgia. Originally set for January 1, this game was postponed to January 2 following a terror attack that resulted in the loss of over a dozen lives and left many others injured.
Notre Dame ultimately defeated Georgia with a score of 23-10.
Sonny was a dedicated football coach, most recently working with a high school football team in Rabun County, Georgia. He coached for nine seasons from 1995 to 2003, with an overall record of 46-48. Sonny also had coaching roles at Bainbridge High School, the same school where Kirby played.
“Marty, the girls, and I are devastated by the news of Sonny Smart’s passing,” Governor Brian Kemp stated on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “An incredible father and husband, as well as a skilled coach, he was often seen supporting Georgia football games alongside his wife Sharon. Sonny exemplified the values and strength we should all aspire to.”
“We keep Sharon, Karl, Kirby, Kendall, and their extended family in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult period. We encourage all Georgians to join us in holding them and those affected by the tragedy in New Orleans in their hearts and prayers.”
