Mike Gundy may be navigating challenging times, but he certainly isn’t backing down. Oklahoma State’s performance has faltered, now sitting at 3-6 without a win in the Big 12 and enduring a painful six-game losing streak that reached a low point with a crushing defeat by Arizona State. Nevertheless, Gundy remains defiant, delivering yet another memorable remark while responding to his critics, as reported by David Hookstead of OutKick.
For Gundy, the sentiment is unmistakable: if you wish to criticize his program, be ready for a comeback. He’s the coach who famously proclaimed, “I’m a man!” and that fervor hasn’t diminished. In his recent remarks, he directed his fire at his most outspoken detractors, suggesting they struggle with their finances. This is quintessential Gundy—raw and unapologetic. He’s not the least bit interested in winning over critics, especially when their jabs are unyielding.
“That’s what happens in college athletics. The platform is just larger, permitting individuals to voice their opinions, and often those who are the loudest and most negative are the very ones with financial struggles,” Gundy told reporters. “They’re not managing their own lives. They’re neglecting their families. They’re failing in their professional roles. Yet, they feel entitled to criticize others, perhaps as a way to alleviate their own frustrations.
“However, when they lay their heads down at night, they remain the same disappointments they were prior to voicing negative opinions about someone else.”
It’s clear that the Cowboys’ season is in turmoil. This performance has not matched fans’ expectations, and many are understandably disheartened by the team’s struggles. Yet, Gundy’s approach is to remain steadfast and confront anyone challenging his leadership. There’s something admirable about that. He is willing to face difficult situations and defend his squad, even if it stirs controversy.
Gundy is a singular figure, and college football is enriched by the presence of coaches like him—those unafraid to share their views and engage with fans, regardless of the obstacles on the field. For better or worse, Gundy shows no indication of retreating.
