The Las Vegas Raiders have made a definitive choice regarding their quarterback situation ahead of their upcoming clash with the Miami Dolphins, confirming Gardner Minshew will remain the starter.
In a press conference on Wednesday, head coach Antonio Pierce elaborated on the decision by saying, “What do you got to lose?” in light of the team’s current record of 2-7.
“When we brought Gardner on board, we expected to see the type of performance we know he can deliver. At times, it’s important to build trust in a player,” Pierce noted.
“Sure, there have been moments, including turnovers and other difficulties, that prompted us to bench him or explore other quarterback options.”
“Nonetheless, this week, Gardner seems to give us the best opportunity to win. He has every chance to go out there and clinch a victory.”
Minshew kicked off the season as the starting quarterback, playing in eight games — with seven of those being starts — racking up 1,501 yards, six touchdowns, and eight interceptions. Additionally, he had four fumbles.
Notable moments include Minshew steering the Raiders to wins against both the Ravens and the Browns, though he encountered difficulties against teams such as the Broncos and Rams.
Recently, the Raiders had opted to bench Minshew for Aidan O’Connell, but O’Connell is now sidelined with a fractured thumb and has been placed on Injured Reserve.
To bolster their quarterback depth, the Raiders acquired Desmond Ridder, who will act as the backup while the offensive unit seeks to establish its rhythm.
An important part of this transition will involve Minshew working with a new play-caller. Veteran NFL coach Norv Turner is set to take the reins of the offense, marking his return to the Raiders for the first time since his stint from 2004 to 2005.
Turner, recognized for guiding the Chargers to multiple playoff appearances as head coach, last served as an offensive coordinator in 2019, overseeing the Panthers’ offense during 2018-19. He also enjoyed a three-year run as the Vikings’ offensive coordinator, which included a division title in 2015.
