The Pittsburgh Steelers are gearing up for Week One with a new quarterback, but it’s unclear who will take the helm.

The choices are primary starter Russell Wilson or backup Justin Fields, both of whom have recently joined the team. The Steelers are set to kick off their NFL season against the Atlanta Falcons this Sunday.

Wilson has been named the starter, but he is dealing with a calf injury that has created some uncertainty. He expressed his eagerness to play when speaking to reporters.

“I’m trying to prepare my body and get ready to go. Just doing everything we can,” Wilson shared, according to Chris Adamski of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Although Wilson participated in some practice on Friday, reports suggest it wasn’t a full session.

“He experienced tightness in his calf during Thursday’s practice and was labeled as limited as a result. Observers at the open portion of Friday’s practice noted Wilson working on the sidelines, and he conveyed that he did not do much in the team segment of the last practice before facing the Falcons,” wrote Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. “Wilson mentioned he aims to be cautious about overexerting himself but remains hopeful about being ready for his Steelers debut.”

Coach Mike Tomlin has never concluded a season with a losing record during his tenure. Some analysts, however, speculate that this year could be different, largely depending on the offense’s stability. On the defensive front, it’s clear that Pittsburgh remains among the league’s elite. Ultimately, the outcome will hinge on Wilson’s performance, and if he is unable to play, Fields will step in.
