Russell Wilson’s first and only Super Bowl victory in his 12-year career is a notable highlight in his ongoing journey. In just his second season, Wilson led the Seahawks to a commanding 43-8 win against Peyton Manning’s Denver Broncos. This remarkable win also tied with Super Bowl XXVII (1993) for the third-largest point differential (35) in Super Bowl history.

During a conversation on the “Not Just Football with Cam Hayward” podcast, Russ reflected on this victory, thanking Bobby Wagner, Brandon Browner, and Richard Sherman for their essential roles in guiding the team.

He also praised the Seahawks’ relentless work ethic, noting that the team “worked their b*tts off” and emphasized the importance of being “obsessive about the job and task:”

“I believe the best aspect of it [Super Bowl] was that we recognized, when we disembarked the bus, we were destined to win every game. We absolutely knew each time we stepped off the bus, we were superior to everyone else… And just when the game was on the line, we felt like we would execute the plays. And indeed, we did.”

In the Seahawks’ 43-8 triumph at MetLife, Wilson threw for 206 yards, completed two touchdowns, and avoided interceptions, achieving a passer rating of 123.1. In contrast, Manning finished with 34 completions on 49 attempts for 280 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in a lackluster performance.

Notably, this Super Bowl victory was the first time a winning team scored over 40 points while restricting their opponent to fewer than 10. Additionally, the Seahawks had to prepare for potentially severe weather conditions leading up to the game.

Even the weather was in the Seahawks’ favor

Wilson admitted that the Seahawks were initially “concerned” about the snow at MetLife Stadium, as they weren’t accustomed to playing under such challenging conditions. He recalled how closely the team monitored the weather as the big game drew near.

“It was anticipated to snow heavily that night. We were anxious that it was indeed going to snow like crazy. Of course, Denver being accustomed to snow and all, they were used to that. But as it turned out, it didn’t.”

Interestingly, the Super Bowl win played a significant role in Wilson’s career, allowing him to extend his time with the Seahawks. After a decade, he joined the very team he had defeated—the Denver Broncos, in 2022.

However, two seasons later, the Broncos released him, leading Wilson to sign a one-year contract with the Steelers in 2024.

In February, Wilson expressed his ambition to win five Super Bowl titles before retiring. With only one championship and time slipping away, Russ is determined to change his fortunes this season.
