The Week 7 college football lineup showcased one of the season’s most anticipated confrontations: the Texas Longhorns versus the Oklahoma Sooners. The Red River rivalry has a history rich with unforgettable moments.
Longhorns Plant Their Flag Through Baker Mayfield’s Jersey
Texas decisively overpowered the Sooners with a commanding 34-3 win. In the aftermath, the Longhorns reinforced the intense rivalry that defines these two teams. After the game concluded, Texas players took the Oklahoma jersey of former standout Baker Mayfield and planted their flag through it at the midfield.

As anticipated, this moment quickly went viral, eliciting a wave of reactions across social media.
One fan remarked on X, previously known as Twitter, “Still salty Baker cooked them 6 years ago,” emphasizing the comment with several clown emojis.
Another user added, “Mayfield hasn’t played CFB since 2017, this is lame asf.”
The Longhorns’ actions seemed to directly respond to Mayfield’s notorious flag-planting incident on the Texas midfield logo after the Sooners’ victory in the 2017 Red River game.
James Franklin Blocks Penn State’s Flag Planting Efforts
Flag planting emerged as a recurring motif in Week 7, as the Penn State Nittany Lions attempted a similar display following their win against USC. The fourth-ranked Nittany Lions managed to hold off the unranked Trojans for a 33-30 overtime victory on Saturday. However, when they tried to plant their flag on the Trojans’ midfield logo, head coach James Franklin intervened. His dissatisfaction was clear as he hurried onto the field to retrieve the flag from his players before heading to the locker room.

Franklin’s frustration likely stemmed from the team’s unconvincing performance. Even though they were favored, the Nittany Lions found themselves down by double digits at halftime. Despite coming back in the second half to maintain their undefeated record, Franklin felt there was little to celebrate.
