NFC Notes: Jeremiyah Love, Cardinals, Rams Special Teams, Seahawks

Cardinals RB Jeremiyah Love did not practice on Wednesday due to an ankle injury, making his Week 6 status unclear at the moment. Arizona HC Mike LaFleur raved about Love’s toughness but thinks rest early in the week is the best approach they can take.

“We all are in agreeance as much as he wants to battle through, we’re all in agreeance right now, it’s just, hey just give it a little bit of rest and see as the week goes on what that’ll entail for Sunday,” LaFleur said, via ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss.“I’m going to try to be as candid as possible with also knowing that everyone’s listening to this, too, but he’s a tough dude. “

“They’re ankles. It’s an ankle. So, you don’t know. I’m not a doctor and each body’s a little bit different. The way he came back from the one in the preseason was unbelievable. I mean, he doesn’t even feel it. But this one is the one that happened when the regular season started and it’s just lingered.”

LaFleur does feel Love’s explosiveness has been hampered a bit and again emphasized the importance of rest.

“You’d have to ask him that. I know how explosive he is. I know how explosive he wants to be. So, I mean, I think that’s a fair assessment in some aspects. Again, I don’t think it’s an overall hindrance, but again, the rest for him is going to be vital.”

Rams HC Sean McVay explained why the team opted for a clean break from K Harrison Mevis and decided to sign K Blake Grupe without having a kicking battle.

“He did a great job for Indy last year, has kicked in a lot of big-time professional settings and we felt like he was the best guy available that had real game experience,” McVay said of Grupe, via Rams Wire. “And you debated going back and forth, ‘do we want to try to create a competition similar to what we did with Karty and Mevis when we first brought him in?’ And what we felt like was the best thing was really just to be able to give him an opportunity to come in here and do his thing, and hopefully build on some real cool momentum that he had established in Indy.”

McVay also told reporters on Tuesday that ST coordinator Bubba Ventrone’s job is safe.

“I have a lot of confidence in Bubba Ventrone,” McVay said, via NFL.com. “There’s no changes that are gonna be made there. We’re gonna keep working. This isn’t the first time that we’ve had adversity and the first time that we’ve had some different things that I have to do a better job of.”

    • When appearing on the Rich Eisen Show, Ian Rapoport said Rams EDGE Myles Garrett (knee) should be close to being ready to return by Week 7.

Brian Fleury is in his first season as the Seahawks’ offensive coordinator. Veteran WR Cooper Kupp said Fleury has a similar demeanor to former OC Klint Kubiak.

“There’s times [that] there’s going to be fiery moments and things like that, but I thought he was so calm and collected and all that stuff,” Kupp said, via Brady Henderson of ESPN. “Brian is giving Klint a run for the money in terms of that same demeanor. … There’s just a clear understanding, so there’s no jittery energy, there’s no false energy. It’s just, ‘Hey, this is what I know to be true. This is how we’re going to execute it. These are my expectations. We’re going to go out there and make it happen and make corrections and move forward.’”

Seattle has dealt with key injuries on offense through the first five weeks of the season, including QB Sam Darnold, RB Jadarian Price and RB Zach Charbonnet. Seahawks HC Mike Macdonald praised Fleury for being “solution-oriented” as issues arise.

“He’s been very solution-oriented in terms of trying to solve the questions that arise from things like that, which I really appreciate,” Macdonald said. “I’ve been impressed with how he’s operated. Very steadfast. Very consistent. He probably didn’t [expect the injuries], but this happens in the NFL. It happens every year in some capacity, really in all three phases. I’ve been impressed with how he’s worked through it.”
