Before the start of Week 1 of the college football season, University of Colorado head coach Deion Sanders, affectionately known as ‘Coach Prime,’ shared an important announcement with players on his team who are fathers. In collaboration with Elevations Credit Union, the initiative aims to set up bank accounts for each player’s children.

Last week, NFL Hall of Famer Sanders took to Twitter to seek a local bank in Boulder or Denver willing to forge a partnership with him and a few team members, revealing the purpose behind this initiative.

During a practice meeting, Coach Prime addressed all players who are fathers, underscoring the importance of embracing their responsibilities as paternal figures.

“I want to make it clear that I’m not here to reprimand you,” Sanders remarked. “You haven’t acted wrongly. On the contrary, you’ve done something commendable. And a child is not a mistake; it’s an opportunity for you to develop, grow, and gain new experiences…”

“You know my beliefs about fatherhood, and it’s important for me to have coaches who excel in that area. I will not hire someone who neglects their responsibilities… I can’t work with coaches who claim they will care for you yet disregard their own children. That principle doesn’t resonate with me.”

“Coach Prime reached out, and Elevations Credit Union responded,” a bank representative said to the gathered players. “Coach Prime asked us to join him today in setting up accounts for the children of valued student-athletes.”

Furthermore, each account will be opened with $2,121 as a nod to Sanders’ legendary #21 jersey, laying a financial groundwork for these players’ future generations.

As for the team’s performance, despite a promising start during Coach Prime’s first year at the helm of the Buffaloes, Colorado finished last season with a 4-8 record.

Nevertheless, optimism is high for the upcoming 2024 season, bolstered by a new recruiting class and the leadership of Sanders’ son, Shedeur, as quarterback. The team is set to face the North Dakota State Bison on Thursday, August 29 at 8:00 pm ET (ESPN).
