The Las Vegas Raiders have placed defensive tackle Christian Wilkins on the physically unable to perform list as he faces a notable setback in his recovery from a broken foot. This decision means Wilkins will be sidelined for at least the start of training camp, which kicks off on Wednesday. As he was added to the PUP list before practices commenced, the Raiders have the option to activate him at any point during camp once he receives medical clearance.

Wilkins suffered a season-ending injury in Week 5 of the previous season and encountered complications during his recovery, resulting in his absence from organized team activities and minicamp.

“It’s been a difficult recovery and he’s done everything he needs to do,” a team spokesperson stated. “He’s been here every day, arriving early and putting in the effort. Although he’s working hard, he’s not quite ready to return. We’re currently navigating a lengthy and challenging recovery process.”

At 29, Wilkins was signed last year to a four-year, $110 million deal with $82.75 million guaranteed. He was anticipated to enhance a defensive line that features pass rushers Maxx Crosby and Malcolm Koonce, following a career-high nine sacks in 2023 with Miami, combined with his outstanding run-stopping skills. Unfortunately, all three defensive linemen faced season-ending injuries.

Before his injury necessitated surgery, Wilkins recorded two sacks and 17 tackles in just five games. He sustained a Jones fracture, which is a break in the bone connecting the pinkie toe to the base of the foot.
