Cathy Lanier Confronts Security Challenges In Wake Of NYC Shooting

Last Monday, a tragic mass shooting occurred at the Manhattan building housing the NFL’s headquarters, resulting in four fatalities and leaving one league employee injured. This incident highlights the need for the NFL to enhance security measures for both the public and its staff, placing significant responsibility on its security operations, overseen by chief security officer Cathy Lanier.

Lanier, who joined the league in 2016, brings nearly thirty years of experience from the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C., where she served as the first female police commissioner for ten years. A notable achievement during her tenure before the NFL was providing security for Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2009, during which there were no arrests or major injuries reported.

Security in sports primarily focuses on significant events, such as the Super Bowl, where a multitude of law enforcement officials from various jurisdictions come together to secure the venue. Lanier’s extensive law enforcement background is vital for planning these events and will assist the league in navigating the aftermath of the shooting.

Brittney Blair, associate managing director at K2 Integrity, a corporate investigations firm, noted that the NFL already possesses one of the most comprehensive security frameworks in sports. “They engage deeply with team owners, venues, and their entire ecosystem to implement top-notch credentialing protocols,” she remarked in a video interview.

However, an incident like an office building shooting presents a unique challenge. In the immediate aftermath, Blair pointed out that Lanier and her team are likely considering the risk of potential copycat incidents.

“Such incidents can inspire similar acts,” Blair asserted, adding that this possibility is certainly a primary concern for their corporate security division, which aims to take proactive measures to prevent any copycat events.

The league had already anticipated the need for heightened security measures in February ahead of Super Bowl 59, just weeks after a terrorist attack on January 1, when a former Army veteran killed 14 people with a rental truck, resulting in a one-week postponement of the Sugar Bowl. At a press conference preceding Super Bowl 59, Lanier indicated that the NFL had reviewed and updated its security strategies in collaboration with Homeland Security and other law enforcement entities.

“In light of the recent attacks, you’ll notice a much more visible law enforcement presence,” she informed the media. “We remain prepared to make any necessary adjustments as conditions evolve leading up to the Super Bowl. Flexibility is key to our responsibilities.”

Lanier also expressed concerns last year that rising tensions among frustrated sports bettors at games were becoming a more significant security issue for the league.

At a different level, Lanier and her team will now need to coordinate a safe return for NFL employees to the office in the coming weeks. In situations involving workplace violence, it is customary for organizations to enhance physical security measures and sometimes to employ trauma specialists to support returning staff. In a memo to team members sent on Tuesday, Commissioner Roger Goodell indicated that, in addition to an increased security presence at headquarters, grief counselors and related resources would be made available to all employees.

Blair emphasized that effective communication regarding protective measures is often overlooked in workplaces, yet it may prove to be one of Lanier and her team’s most vital tools. In addition to encouraging employees to remain vigilant about their surroundings, Blair stated that Lanier’s team will be responsible for reinforcing existing risk monitoring systems and protocols already in place.

“In situations like this, when returning from an act of violence, clear communication about security measures is crucial,” she noted. “People must be aware that a dedicated security team is here to ensure their safety.”
