The Nebraska Cornhuskers have secured their new quarterback through the NCAA transfer portal. Kenny Minchey, previously of Notre Dame, has committed to join Nebraska, according to sources reported by CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz.
Minchey, a four-star recruit and the No. 12 quarterback in the 2023 signing class, competed for the starting position against C.J. Carr at Notre Dame this past summer. While Minchey ultimately lost that battle, the competition was more intense than anticipated, with sources indicating it was too close to call.
“It really could’ve gone either way, with opinions split on who should start,” one insider commented.
As Minchey impressed the coaching staff with his reliability, Carr complemented his big-play potential with some inconsistency, a characteristic that proved pivotal.
The fact that Minchey excelled in some aspects of the competition may suggest that Nebraska has acquired a promising player through the transfer portal. His limited experience at Notre Dame included a brief appearance where he completed 20 of 26 passes for 196 yards without scoring any touchdowns or throwing interceptions.
However, Minchey did manage to contribute on the ground with 84 rushing yards and a touchdown, showcasing some versatility.
Upon arriving in Lincoln, Minchey faces the challenge of leading Nebraska to greater heights. Following two consecutive 7-6 seasons under coach Matt Rhule, the program is eager to compete more strongly for a Big Ten title.
Replacing Dylan Raiola, a former five-star recruit who did not meet expectations, Minchey enters the fray amidst rising speculation about Raiola’s transfer. This speculation intensified when Raiola’s brother, Dayton, decommitted from Nebraska last November and was compounded by the dismissal of Donovan Raiola, Dylan’s uncle, who served as the offensive line coach.
