The New York Jets are making a notable addition to their coaching staff by hiring Seth Ryan as the offensive passing game coordinator. This move, reported by the Associated Press, marks another chapter in a family deeply rooted in Jets history.
Seth Ryan, the son of former Jets head coach Rex Ryan, comes to New York after five seasons with the Detroit Lions, where he held several positions, including assistant tight ends coach last year.
Ryan will now support head coach Aaron Glenn, whose team is looking to reshape their offensive strategies. The announcement was confirmed by a source who chose to remain anonymous as the Jets had yet to make an official statement. Initial reports from ESPN detailed Ryan’s addition to Glenn’s staff.
At just 31 years old, Seth Ryan joins a lineage of coaching talent within the franchise. His father, Rex Ryan, coached the Jets from 2009 to 2014 and is now an ESPN analyst. His late grandfather, Buddy Ryan, served as the defensive line coach during the Jets’ early success, including the team’s first Super Bowl appearance.
Seth’s football journey began as a wide receiver at Summit High School, only a few miles from the Jets’ training facility in Florham Park, New Jersey. He then went on to play at Clemson University, contributing to the team that triumphed over Alabama in the 2017 College Football Playoff national championship.
He kicked off his coaching career with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2019 as an offensive quality control coach. In 2021, Ryan stepped into a role as an assistant wide receivers coach with the Lions when Glenn was the team’s defensive coordinator under head coach Dan Campbell.
The Jets are also welcoming Frank Reich, who was hired by Glenn to replace Tanner Engstrand. Engstrand led the Jets’ offense last season during a disappointing 3-14 campaign. This coaching change is part of a broader offseason overhaul aimed at revitalizing the team’s performance following last year’s struggles.
