After the game, Tennessee Head Coach Josh Heupel commented on the situation, emphasizing the importance of maintaining standards within the team. “At the end of the day, there’s a standard you’ve got to meet to be in that locker room,” Heupel stated. “He was not out on the field with us.”
Standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing 200 pounds, Carter entered his sophomore year with high expectations as a crucial part of the Vols’ secondary. Over the course of his time at Tennessee, he recorded a total of 25 tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss. Despite showing promise, he has not started any games this season following a strong debut in his freshman year in 2024.
The offseason proved challenging for Carter. He missed several team activities and had to confront some difficult discussions with team leaders, ultimately resulting in him stepping away from the program temporarily in July. Upon his return, Heupel indicated that there were still certain objectives Carter needed to complete before rejoining the team on the field.
Even before the confirmation of his departure, there were indications that Carter might be considering a transfer. As a former four-star recruit, he is likely to attract considerable interest from other programs when the transfer window opens in January, depending on evaluations from rival teams regarding his time in Knoxville.
Throughout his career at Tennessee, Carter accumulated 63 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, and one interception. His contributions, although not fully realized in a starting capacity, highlighted the potential he brought to the team.
