Veteran wide receiver Courtland Sutton has finalized a four-year, $92 million contract extension with the Denver Broncos, according to various reports. Throughout this week, Sutton had limited participation in training camp practices as negotiations were underway. Coach Sean Payton noted on Monday that both parties had made significant progress and anticipated finalizing the extension shortly.
“He’s had limited reps, and I think we’re close,” Payton mentioned. “I’m not going to jump the gun on it, but we’re very close on a contract. The aim, from our meeting involving him and George (Paton), was this coming Monday. So I expect there will be some news fairly soon.”
At 29 years old, Sutton was entering the final year of a four-year, $60.8 million extension he signed in November 2021. Previously, he had a cap hit of $20.2 million slated for the 2025 season, as per Spotrac. With the newly signed extension, he is set to earn around $23 million annually until the end of the 2029 season.
Last year, the veteran receiver recorded a career-high 81 catches, amassing 1,081 yards and eight touchdowns—marking the second-highest totals of his career. This achievement also represented his first 1,000-yard season since 2019, the year he earned his sole Pro Bowl selection in his second NFL season.
During the previous offseason, Sutton opted out of voluntary workouts while negotiating a new deal, which ultimately did not materialize. Nonetheless, the Broncos added $1.5 million in performance-based incentives to his contract, which he successfully earned. He outperformed Denver’s next leading receiver, Devaughn Vele, by catching 40 more passes; Vele had a total of 41 receptions.
This extension fortifies the primary target for quarterback Bo Nix within an offense that finished 10th in the NFL for scoring last season, averaging 25 points per game—the Broncos’ best scoring performance since the Peyton Manning era.
Last season, Denver reached the playoffs for the first time in nine years, following their victory in Super Bowl 50 at the conclusion of the 2015 season. Sutton has been a reliable presence in the Broncos’ offensive lineup since being selected in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of SMU. He has led the team in receiving yards for four out of the last seven seasons, navigating a series of quarterback changes—a situation that seems to be stabilizing with Nix’s notable performance during his rookie campaign in 2024.
Entering his eighth NFL season, Sutton has accumulated a total of 379 receptions for 5,340 yards and 32 touchdowns.
