This decision follows a challenging performance during a recent game against the Dolphins in Spain, where Gay missed two crucial field goal attempts, including a potential game-winner from over 50 yards.
The Commanders brought Gay on board earlier this offseason after he was unexpectedly released by the Indianapolis Colts. At 31 years old, Gay entered the league when he was drafted in the fifth round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2019, coming from the University of Utah. He faced a setback early in his career when Tampa Bay waived him after training camp, despite being considered a promising talent.
After his release, he joined the Colts’ practice squad, but his career took a turn when the Los Angeles Rams signed him in November 2020. Gay made a notable comeback with the Rams, ultimately re-signing with the team in 2022 on a restricted free-agent contract.
His successful stint in Los Angeles led him to explore the market further as an unrestricted free agent, culminating in a significant four-year, $22.5 million deal with the Colts, marking it as one of the highest contracts for a kicker at the time. However, after being let go from the Colts this past offseason, Gay quickly found opportunity with the Commanders, signing a one-year, fully guaranteed contract worth $4.25 million.
During his time with the Commanders in 2025, Gay played in 10 games and successfully converted 13 out of 19 field goal attempts, reflecting a conversion rate of 68.4%. He also excelled in extra points, making all 22 attempts.
