During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, ESPN’s Adam Schefter indicated that the Washington Commanders and wide receiver Terry McLaurin are still at an impasse regarding contract negotiations, with no progress from either party as of now.
Schefter provided insight into the factors contributing to the stalled negotiations, explaining that the parties hold fundamentally contrasting views on what constitutes a fair new deal.
“There’s no update on the Terry McLaurin situation and that’s the update,” Schefter remarked. “…The issue stems from the fact that McLaurin could argue that his statistics align with other wide receivers like Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, and D.K. Metcalf, who have all secured contracts exceeding $30 million per year this offseason. Conversely, the Commanders can point to Mike Evans, with comparably similar stats, who is earning $24 million annually.”

McLaurin, drafted in 2019 alongside Metcalf, is just two years younger than Evans, who entered the league in 2014. With McLaurin turning 30 this September, there are clear concerns within the Washington organization regarding the investment in a player of that age.
Nevertheless, Schefter insisted that the Commanders are unlikely to part ways with McLaurin, even if trade interest arises in the coming months during this ongoing stalemate.
“We’ll see if any teams decide to inquire about Terry McLaurin, hoping to entice the Commanders to let him go,” Schefter suggested. “I can’t envision Washington moving on from him, irrespective of any discontent he may express.”
He drew a parallel to the ongoing contract discussions surrounding Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt, noting the difficulty in foreseeing a scenario where the two sides fail to reconcile their differences. However, as it stands today, they remain far apart.
Entering the last year of his contract in 2025, the veteran receiver is coming off a standout season with the rising Commanders. He opted out of mandatory minicamp in June to signal his dissatisfaction with the ongoing negotiations.
McLaurin, who was selected 76th overall in the third round by Washington from Ohio State in 2019, originally signed a four-year, $3,962,594 rookie contract.
After being set to enter unrestricted free agency in 2023, he agreed to a three-year, $71 million extension. He’s currently in the final year of that agreement, with a base salary of $15.5 million lined up for 2025.
Last season, McLaurin participated in all 17 games, accumulating 82 receptions on 117 targets for 1,096 yards, averaging 13.4 yards per catch, and scoring 13 touchdowns.
