The Miami Dolphins are actively pursuing talent for their head coaching role. They’ve requested to interview Lions defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard, as reported by Ian Rapoport.
Sheppard, at 37, entered the NFL as a third-round draft pick by the Bills in 2011. His initial tenure in Buffalo was brief, as he was traded to the Colts for defensive end Jerry Hughes.
His time in Indianapolis was short-lived, leading to a waiver at the start of the 2014 season. Later that same year, he signed with the Dolphins, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his career. After stints with the Giants and Bears, he eventually returned to New York.
Sheppard concluded his playing days with the Lions in 2018, transitioning seamlessly into coaching. In 2020, he took on a role as director of player development at his alma mater, LSU, before returning to the Lions as their outside linebackers coach in 2021.
His ascent in the coaching ranks has been noteworthy. Sheppard was promoted to linebackers coach in 2022, eventually taking over as the team’s defensive coordinator in 2025.
Over his playing career, Sheppard participated in 107 games, accumulating 429 tackles, three sacks, two interceptions, and 11 pass defenses.
Stay tuned for more updates on Sheppard as the coaching search unfolds.
