Georgia Secures Elite 2027 RB Kemon Spell: A Game-Changer for College Football Recruitment

    Pittsburgh Sports Now

The chapter on the 2026 college football recruiting cycle is still unfolding, yet Georgia has already cast its gaze toward the 2027 class, making a significant move. Kemon Spell, ranked as the No. 7 overall recruit and the leading running back in the nation, according to 247Sports, pledged his commitment to the Bulldogs on Monday. This commitment marks him as the second five-star player to choose a destination in the class.

Hailing from McKeesport, Pa., Spell was initially committed to Penn State. However, the abrupt dismissal of coach James Franklin midseason in 2025 prompted him to decommit and reopen his recruitment. With schools like Georgia, Notre Dame, and Miami aggressively pursuing him, he also received additional offers from Nebraska, Oregon, and Ole Miss.

“It’s just the love and relationship between all the coaches,” Spell shared with 247Sports regarding his connection with Georgia. “When I first visited, meeting Kirby Smart was amazing. The experience was nothing short of excellent since then, and we’ve kept in touch almost every day.”

Despite facing an ankle injury that caused him to miss three games early in his junior season at McKeesport, Spell accumulated impressive stats: 1,755 yards rushing and 32 touchdowns combined from carrying the ball, receiving, and returning kicks.

Spell is not just a highlight in the 2027 running back class; he is also one of only nine recruits to achieve five-star status early in this recruiting cycle. Initially ranked as the No. 59 player by 247Sports, he has consistently climbed the rankings over the past 18 months.

“Overall, it’s a fantastic school and an ideal place for me,” Spell remarked. “From the moment I arrived, the support and rapport with the coaches ignited something within me. It felt like home right from the start.”

Although we are still in the early stages of the 2027 recruiting calendar, Georgia is positioning itself for a top-tier class. After Spell’s commitment, they currently rank sixth nationally in the team rankings and have three other players committed who rank No. 54 or better overall. Cornerback Donte Wright (No. 34) and offensive tackle Kelsey Adams (No. 54) are among the other notable recruits in this growing class.

As Kirby Smart prepares to finalize his No. 6-ranked 2026 class, it’s worth noting his history of top-tier recruiting. Since taking over at Georgia, he has never secured anything lower than a top-10 class and has produced three No. 1 classes in the past decade. The events leading up to this Wednesday’s National Signing Day promise to add yet another competitive edge to the Bulldogs’ already impressive resume.
