The Indianapolis Colts have emerged as a surprising contender in the NFL this season, largely due to the stellar performance of running back Jonathan Taylor. While much of the media attention has centered around standout quarterback Daniel Jones and his remarkably strong outings, it’s clear that the Colts are building a solid case as one of the league’s top teams.
Jonathan Taylor’s Dominance on the Field
Jonathan Taylor has quickly established himself as a key player for the Colts, finding openings behind a revamped offensive line and showcasing his skills in the early games of the 2025 season. After an impressive start to his NFL career, which included 30 rushing touchdowns over his first two seasons, Taylor had a slight setback due to an ankle injury in 2022 that diminished his performance. However, he bounced back in 2024, amassing over 1,000 rushing yards and earning a Pro Bowl selection, reaffirming his status as one of the elite running backs in the league.
As of now, Taylor is leading the NFL in several crucial categories. With 236 rushing yards in just two games, he tops the charts, alongside Travis Etienne Jr., as the only running backs exceeding 200 yards this season. More impressive is his ability to break tackles and gain additional yards after contact, boasting 202 yards after contact and forcing 14 missed tackles thus far. Taylor’s exceptional game against the Denver Broncos saw him run for 165 yards on 25 carries, all while contributing an additional 50 yards and a touchdown through the air.
One of the most striking statistics of Taylor’s performance this season is his speed. He clocked in at a remarkable 22.38 mph after catching a pass in Week 2, marking the fastest speed recorded by any ball carrier since Raheem Mostert’s famous run for the Miami Dolphins back in 2020.
A New Era with Daniel Jones
The arrival of Daniel Jones at quarterback has transformed the Colts’ offense drastically. His leadership has sparked discussions about the future of former quarterback Anthony Richardson with the franchise. In their season opener against the Miami Dolphins, the Colts showcased their potential but faced skepticism regarding their place among the league’s elite.
However, a subsequent offensive explosion against the Denver Broncos dispelled doubts. Jones threw for 316 yards and a touchdown, complementing a robust running game that kept the momentum firmly in the Colts’ favor. With two wins in two games, the team appears rejuvenated, but there remains ample room for improvement.
The Colts’ tight end Tyler Warren, a first-round rookie, has also shined in the early part of the season. His impressive performances have made him the top tight end in the league for receiving yards, having recorded 11 receptions for 155 yards so far. With such talent, the Colts have a promising foundation to build upon as the season progresses.
With Jonathan Taylor’s explosive running and Daniel Jones’s reinvigorated leadership, the Indianapolis Colts are not only surprising the league but are also poised for a strong season ahead.
