The New York Jets narrowly missed the opportunity to hand their former quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, a rough debut with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Despite this, there are numerous reasons for optimism, especially after a challenging 2024 season.
New head coach Aaron Glenn expressed satisfaction with quarterback Justin Fields, who transitioned from the Steelers, showing improvement that was previously elusive during his early years in the NFL.
Under the strategic guidance of new offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand, Fields helped propel the Jets’ offense to a commendable 32 points against a formidable Steelers defense filled with standout players. Engstrand, who joined the Jets from the Detroit Lions, previously served as the Lions’ passing game coordinator alongside Ben Johnson, who also departed in the offseason.
Jets Poised for an AFC East Showdown
The Jets will clash with divisional rivals, the Buffalo Bills, in Week 2. ESPN Analyst Mina Kimes opines that Engstrand’s offense may be positioned to exploit weaknesses in the Bills’ defense similar to what the Baltimore Ravens did in their recent matchup.
The Bills managed to overcome the Ravens even after being pushed to the brink, despite being dominated offensively for a large part of the game. The Ravens showcased their relentless ground game, exemplified by Derrick Henry’s impressive 169 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Exploiting Defensive Weaknesses
Mina Kimes highlighted the Bills’ vulnerability to outside zone rushing, a tactic the Jets appear well-equipped to employ with star running back Breece Hall. In her assessments, she noted the importance of maximizing their running game potential with Fields as a dual threat. She remarked, “Can this offensive line take the leap that we thought they would? Yes, yes and yes.” Hall averaged an impressive 5.6 yards per carry, supported by a 53% success rate, showcasing his effectiveness in various offensive schemes.
Fields himself also exhibited promise on the ground, with his Week 1 performance suggesting he could be a significant factor in the Jets’ rushing attack against the Bills. This potential aligns with Kimes’ analysis of how linebacker positioning and tackling issues plagued the Bills in their previous game.
Bills’ Defensive Setback
Adding to the Jets’ favorable outlook, the absence of star defensive tackle Ed Oliver for their match against the Jets represents a significant setback for the Bills. Oliver’s impact was evident when he forced a crucial fumble from Derrick Henry and applied pressure on Lamar Jackson that influenced critical decisions in the Ravens’ game.
Many analysts, including Kimes, have sensed that the Bills’ run defense lacks stability even with Oliver in the lineup. This opens the door for comparisons between running performances, as highlighted by the statistics contrasting Breece Hall’s and Derrick Henry’s Week 1 outings.
The Jets’ offensive line also performed well against the Steelers, even in the absence of key player Alijah Vera-Tucker. The seamless integration of rookie right tackle Armand Membou into the lineup has been a notable bright spot.
| Player | Rushing Attempts | Rushing Yards | Average | Touchdowns |
| Breece Hall | 18 | 107 | 5.6 | 0 |
| Derrick Henry | 19 | 169 | 9.1 | 2 |
Although it remains early in the season, the Jets appear positioned to challenge the Bills, particularly with Josh Allen’s unpredictable nature at quarterback. Opportunities to capitalize on defensive weaknesses could set the stage for an exciting matchup.
