GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Cam Achord will step into the role of special teams coordinator for the Green Bay Packers, marking a new chapter after his tenure with the New York Giants.
Packers head coach Matt LaFleur confirmed the hiring of Achord on Friday. Previously, Achord served as the Giants’ assistant special teams coach from 2024-25 and was the primary special teams coordinator for the New England Patriots from 2020-23.
This change comes as the Packers look to revamp their special teams department following the departure of the former coordinator, who had held the position for the last four years.
Green Bay has faced struggles in this area, with issues stemming from special teams performance that have disrupted their postseason ambitions in recent years. The Packers had three different special teams coordinators leading up to LaFleur’s arrival in 2019, further contributing to the instability.
Last season’s challenges on special teams played a significant role in Green Bay’s early playoff exit, a frustration for fans and players alike.
In a crucial game with the NFC North title on the line, the Packers fell to the Bears in overtime on December 20. The game turned when Chicago executed a successful onside kick, leading to the game-tying touchdown. Additionally, kicker Brandon McManus struggled, missing two field-goal attempts and an extra point during the game.
Despite these setbacks, Green Bay can take comfort in having one of the league’s most effective punters in Daniel Whelan. Last season, he distinguished himself by becoming the first Packer since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 to lead the league in gross punting average.
