“I’m not sure what’s happening this year. Injuries are rampant across the league,” Micah Parsons stated during an episode of The Edge podcast. With an average of at least 25 injuries reported weekly throughout the 2024 NFL season, the Cowboys linebacker’s concerns seem entirely justified.
This alarming situation has understandably raised flags among players. Parsons compared it to the 2021 season, notorious for its substantial injury toll. The ongoing crisis has also affected various teams, including the 49ers, who currently hold a 4-4 record this season.
Parsons shared insights on the ramifications of these injuries, mentioning that Stefon Diggs, brother of Trevon Diggs, is facing a season-ending injury. He underscored the broader ramifications that these injuries impose on families and noted:
“It’s kind of horrific, man. You hate to see it because it’s a brotherhood, and we always want to see each other healthy and get home safe to our kids or whatever. But it’s just been so demoralizing recently with the injuries. I saw what’s going on with your brother, so I am praying for him too.”
In response, co-host and teammate Trevon Diggs recognized the wave of injuries impacting many players. Parsons proceeded to question whether the type of playing surface—grass or turf—might influence injury rates. Diggs recounted his own experience, saying that his knee often hurts on turf, and added:
“Yes, it’s been a tough year across the league in the NFL. A lot of injuries, a lot of guys going down. I feel like it’s making it tough for everybody just trying to win those games. Trying to win without key pieces, that’s tough to do. It’s been a crazy year.”
It’s also important to mention that the Cowboys linebacker is currently dealing with a high-ankle sprain, which has kept him out for three consecutive games. To further illustrate his point, Parsons highlighted several prominent players who suffered injuries just last week.
“This year, it’s just been so hectic. Last week, it was Chris Godwin and Mike Evans. It just seems like every week, somebody new is going through hardship.”
While several players, including Christian McCaffrey, remain out, others like Jordan Love and Tua Tagovailoa have returned to action. Nevertheless, the overarching reality is evident: the number of injuries in the NFL is on the rise this year, a troubling trend.
